'57' by Francesco Gioia

Edition

57 is the debut monograph from Francesco Gioia, a self-taught photographer born in Florence and based in London. The work is street photography, but Gioia treats the street as raw material. His training is in collage, Bauhaus composition, and the European avant-garde of the 1920s, and that grammar runs through every frame. Form, color, and accident are arranged rather than simply found.

The images hold a single position: that beauty in the present is concealed, and surfaces only for an attentive eye. Gioia photographs the ordinary and lets it stay ordinary, then finds the structure inside it.

His work has been recognized internationally, including awards judged by Magnum photographers Richard Kalvar and Bruce Gilden, and has appeared in The Guardian and The Washington Post. 57 is his first book.
