In March 2021, Others Magazine published Issue 2 with Kate Bellm on the cover. This is the conversation from that issue: working without compromise, self-published books, no clients dictating the work. That independence is the heart of her practice and the reason I keep returning to it.
"I've decided to ONLY follow my creative impulses. I shoot what I love and I don't do it for any magazine or for anyone but myself and the model."
Bellm has spent most of her career in motion. Buckingham Palace at sixteen, Harley biker gangs in South Carolina, models in remote locations across continents. The interview catches her at the moment she stopped traveling.
"This year I have finally found myself staying in the same place for the entire year and my creativity is extremely strong from this moment of settled life."
Her book LA ISLA, made in collaboration with Frank Rocholl and Mirage Magazine, was shot during that year on Mallorca. It became one of her most ambitious works, the result of staying in one place long enough to see it.
